A Conversations with Reno Debets (Erasmus MC). Cell and gene therapies are at the very centre of healthcare innovation and are responsible for a paradigm shift in the treatment of many diseases. European research institutions contribute significantly to the development of such therapies, yet the number of cell and gene therapies that are introduced to the market remains limited. Current EU regulatory frameworks are not fully adapted to the specificities of these new therapies, thereby challenging optimal patient access and sustainability of these innovative products within European healthcare systems.
On 21 November 2025, the European University Hospital Alliance (EUHA) will gather at Aarhus University Hospital(AUH) for its Members’ Assembly. The meeting also marks the conclusion of AUH’s presidency and the handover to Helsinki University Hospital. We have met AUH’s CEO, Thomas Balle Kristensen, for a talk about the importance of the alliance, AUH’s presidency and the two priority themes: antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and “leading wise choices in healthcare”.
The highly anticipated EUHA Members’ Assembly will take place on June 25 at Erasmus MC. This event will bring together EUHA CEOs to discuss EUHA’s ongoing projects, review the progress of EUHA Working Groups and Networks, and prioritise activities. We met with the CEO of Erasmus MC, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, and current EUHA President, Prof Dr Stefan Sleijfer, who shared his perspective on the assembly, highlighting its vital role in shaping EUHA’s direction and agenda.
Since June 2022, 91 nurses from EUHA hospitals have had the opportunity to exchange best nursing practices through EUHA Focus Visits. Guided by fellow EUHA nurses in a different hospital setting, participants spend a day shadowing colleagues in the wards, gaining firsthand insights into diverse nursing approaches while fostering mutual learning and professional growth.

With the appointment of a Secretary-General, EUHA aims to represent the concerns of academic medicine and strengthen its role as advisor to policymakers at the EU level.
